The Plugs Guest Steven Goff (Washington Post)

We caught up with Steven Goff to touch on DC United trading striker Fabian Espindola, GK Bill Hamid’s bright future, MLS expansion, and the US men’s & women’s national teams. DC United are currently 7th in the Eastern Conference MLS Standings, so they took the younger approach, trading the 31 yr. old striker in Espindola to Vancouver, and received 24 yr. old forward Patrick Mullins from NYFC. Mullins is a former local favorite, having shined during his University of Maryland soccer days. As for GK Bill Hamid, injuries riddled him in the earlier part of the year, but has been playing well as of late since his return. The 25 yr. old has a lot of promise, and could potentially become the USMNT’s starting GK after Guzman’s term. We also  talked about if the MLS will be able to attract the top European star players in their prime, something David Beckham is trying to do by potentially creating an expansion team in Miami. We lastly talked about the backlash from Abby Wambach’s criticism of USMNT’s coach, Jurgen Klinsmann, and the future of soccer in the US.
