Clairo – Charm
By Noah Temple | Top Tracks: “Terrapin,” “Add Up My Love” and “Glory of the Snow”
Charm is Clairo’s third album and her first independent release, which allows for a cohesive sound as it was made without the constraints of a label. The bedroom pop sensation continues to develop her sound, as while the vocals have the same wispy soft delivery, the backing tracks incorporate more woodwind instruments, such as the clarinet in “Second Nature.”
Executively produced by Cottrill and Leon Michels, the backing tracks contain an arrangement of instruments that deliver a funky and compelling sound, which makes each track a unique and fun listen while they all flow into each other so naturally that the album feels like one 40-minute song at times.
Singles like “Sexy to Someone” and “Juna” were released and instantly caught fire on TikTok due to their addictive sound, and met the same fate as many Clairo songs, which are being mashed up with any and every song under the sun. They helped to garner lots of attention to the album, and as of today, it is sitting comfortably at around 440 million streams across all of its songs (though streams are NOT the only thing that matters).
Ultimately, this was a wonderful album and an incredibly easy listen. Clairo has always been a hitmaker, and this album is no exception; it is perfect to put on in almost any context, as the lyrics and backing tracks can fit any mood or feeling.
