Rochester originating indie rock band Joywave, consisting of members Daniel Armbruster, Joseph Morinelli, and Paul Brenner, is coming to the 9:30 Club on Thursday, October 12th, for their Permanent Pleasure Tour. Permanent Pleasure is their fifth studio album, coming three years after their previous release, Cleanse and ushering in a new era of Joywave’s music, one accompanied by a sweet little kitty featured in their album art, short film, merch, on stage, and as a cozy figurine to sit on the album’s record as it spins.

The album begins with a short audio clip from 1984 of Rochester’s mayor discussing Rochester’s culture and introducing the album as a musical journey before transitioning into gritty instrumentals and vocalist Daniel Armbruster’s soft singing. While previous releases from the group leaned more electronic, especially with their most recognizable tracks “Tongues” and “Dangerous”, Permanent Pleasure is more notably instrumentally drums, guitars, and vocals. Their electronic flair isn’t gone in the slightest, featuring incredibly on tracks like “Brain Damage”.  Conceptually Permanent Pleasure is a well rounded experience, starting with the mayor’s introduction and continuing on with songs like “He’s Back!”, describing Jesus as an irritable finance bro, and “Sleepytime Fantasy”, a not-so-gentle lullaby.

After seeing the group open for Two Door Cinema Club this past year,  there’s no doubt that they’ll bring an insane amount of energy to 9:30, so this show is definitely one to look forward to. Also, massive kitty statue on stage. Be there!
