On Saturday, March 22, indie rock band Horsegirl will perform at the Black Cat, supported by Free Range and Emotional World. The Black Cat is a quaint venue in the Shaw/U Street neighborhood. It has a capacity of 800 people and is an approximately 7-minute walk from U Street Metro Station, serviced by the Green Line.

Horsegirl began in Chicago in 2019. Nora Cheng, Penelope Lowenstein and Gigi Reece, the band’s members, formed the band when they attended high school together. Now living in New York City, the trio has continued to make music together, with their most recent release being Phonetics On and On, their sophomore album. While the band can be labeled as indie rock, they draw inspiration from 90s rock, shoegaze, indie pop and much more. Their development as a band is evident; their sound has evolved from their 2022 album, Versions of Modern Performance, now embracing the sound of silence and pronounced syllables to accompany their theme of phonetics.

Sofia Jensen leads Free Range, an indie folk band also based in Chicago. Their profound lyricism, which expresses loneliness and longing, is incredible for being 21. Their second album, Lost & Found, comes out on March 28, so pre-save or pre-order it on your favorite streaming platform!

Last, but certainly not least, is D.C.’s very own Emotional World. The four-piece has performed at local venues such as Songbyrd, Comet Ping Pong and Quarry House, and now take on the Black Cat. The band branches into many genres, such as shoegaze, punk, noise rock and indie inspirations.

Overall, the concert will be a beautiful display of lyricism and multi-genre combinations. Tickets are only $20, so be sure to show up!
