Stephen Bruner, also known as Thundercat, is an American musician commonly known for his sick bass lines, funky R&B melodies, and silly lyrics that talk about him wanting to be a cat! Arguably one of the greatest bassists today, Thundercat is truly a spectacle when it comes to blending existentialism with his whimsical, playful energy. The vibe that he brings turns every song into a journey that transcends your mind, guiding you through deep thoughts and feelings with his beautiful bass lines.
Throughout his discography, I think it is safe to say that his two albums, Drunk (2016) and It Is What It Is (2020), are considered his best work. On Drunk, “Them Changes” stands out with its hypnotic drums and unforgettable bass groove that makes it impossible not to nod your head to. But that is not the only gem: “Tokyo” and “Show You The Way,” featuring Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins, are two personal favorites of mine because they represent that core sound of Thundercat’s style. Shifting our view to It Is What It Is, “Dragonball Durag” takes the cake in terms of popularity as well as its identity of Thundercat. It perfectly represents his personality with its hilarious and self-aware lyrics, while “Interstellar Love” dives deep into that existential feeling of the vastness and scope of the world. Its soaring saxophone and drums make for one of the most emotional moments in his entire catalog.
You can see Thundercat on October 28th at the Anthem in Washington, D.C. As someone who has been a longtime fan, I am so excited to see him live for the first time, and I already know I will be spending way too much on merchandise as well! Overall, if you are a fan of jazz, funk or R&B, I highly recommend catching Thundercat on tour. You will witness some of the craziest bass playing ever and maybe even hear him sing about his love of cats!
