MONSTA X at EagleBank Arena
Go To This Because We Asked So Nicely – A Concert Preview
By Sonya Lee
Making their mark in the K-pop scene, MONSTA X debuted on May 14, 2015. The boy group consists of six members: Shownu, Minhyuk, Kihyun, Hyungwon, Joohoney, and I.M.. Under Starship Entertainment, the group brings out a heavy blend of EDM and hip-hop tones in their music. Though not applicable to every formation of a K-pop group (but also quite common in the industry), MONSTA X was formed through a survival show called NO.MERCY. The ten-episode survival show was a collaboration between MNET and Starship Entertainment to form the next big boy group. From the thirteen trainees present in the program, the six members who form the group now known today as MONSTA X were born. Supporting the members throughout their journey is their loyal ‘Monbebe’. The meaning behind the fandom name is a combination of the words ‘mon’ and ‘bebe ’, which individually mean ‘my’ and ‘lover’. When combined, the name Monbebe means ‘my lover ’, which is what the group calls their fans. Speaking of meanings, the group’s name is also broken down into an interesting level. MONSTA X is a name that’s split into three sections when understanding the meaning; first is ‘MON ’, which stands for monster. Second is ‘STA ’, which stands for star, with the final part being ‘X ’, which symbolizes the infinite possibilities. Together, the culmination of the name comes out to be “monsters who will conquer the K-pop scene”. Having such a standout meaning behind a group name, it comes as no surprise that the group has such vivid official colors. Team colors that represent a group are currently a dying form, but MONSTA X has three colors that embody the group. Those colors are teal green, dark blue, and magenta. Teal green symbolizes ‘lost’, dark blue embodies ‘guilty ’, and magenta illustrates ‘beauty’.With their eleven-year career, MONSTA X have won a plethora of awards along with many high-charting songs. Some of the most well-known songs from the group are HERO [2nd Mini Album: Rush], WHO DO U LOVE? (feat. French Montana) [1st English Studio Album: All About Luv], MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT [1st English Studio Album: All About Luv], DRAMARAMA [5th Mini Album: The Code], Someone’s Someone [1st English Studio Album: All About Luv], Love Killa [3rd Studio Album: Fatal Love], and Shoot Out [2nd Studio Album: Take.1 Are You There?]. The mentioned list of songs simply scratches the surface, but there are more songs that encompass the identity of MONSTA X that many people know of. Throughout the years, the group has won 23 music show awards. Music show awards are weekly awards given to the top charting artist in Korea for that week, along with fan votes. The song that won the largest number of awards is the track Rush Hour [10th Mini Album: No Limit], sitting at five wins. To name some official awards the group has won, to their name MONSTA X has 3 Melon Music Awards, 7 Golden Disc Awards, 7 MAMA Awards, 4 Seoul Music Awards, 6 Asia Artist Awards, 2 Korea First Brand Awards, 5 Soribada Best K-Music Award, 4 Vlive Awards, 1 Dong A’s Pick Award, 4 Fact Music Awards, 1 Brave Otto Award, 3 APAN Music Awards, 1 Asia Model Award, 1 Gaon Chart Music Award, and 1 Hanteo Music Award. Those were just to name a few out of the many awards the group has to their name. This upcoming tour isn’t the first time the group has come to Washington, D.C., or even EagleBank Arena at that! Actually, MONSTA X is a frequent visitor to the nation’s capital! They’ve performed as part of the lineup from last year’s Jingle Ball, and they were at EagleBank Arena four years ago. This concert marks the group’s return to the very venue!
*Notice: Member I.M. will not be present on the tour as he’s undergoing mandatory military service.*
