Marietta at Black Cat
Go To This Because We Asked So Nicely – A Concert Preview
By Alexandra Henriques
After a 10-year hiatus, Philadelphia’s emo revival band Marietta is doing a reunion tour and stopping at Washington, D.C.’s Black Cat on Nov. 23. Their rare live appearance since the group disbanded in 2015 is sure to be a monumental, intimate and cathartic experience at one of D.C.’s coziest venues.
Marietta formed in 2011 by a group of friends and/or acquaintances connected at a college party. The quartet was active until 2015. During the time, they released two full-length records (Summer Death and As It Were), as well as an EP and two split albums (which, ironically, were both in collaboration with Modern Baseball). Through streaming and the rise in popularity of midwest-emo music over the years, Marietta has continued to be one of the most popular emo revival bands, with their album Summer Death consistently cited as one of the best emo albums of all time. Additionally, since their break in 2015, they released a demos EP in 2020, and a five-year anniversary edition of Summer Death.
Their short yet emotionally profound discography is sure to be on full display during their performance at the Black Cat. For fans of shout-along basement anthems, distinctive guitar riffs and the overall midwest-emo genre, the show is a must-see, especially since you never know if they will return to a hiatus after this tour or when they will be performing live next. Marietta’s appearance at the Black Cat stands out as one of the year’s most anticipated underground shows.

Is anyone else going to this? I enjoy this band, but don’t know anyone else who listens to the genre. My plan is to be at the Metro Station Vienna metro station about an hour and a half before the show starts. I can also provide a ride to the station for anyone who needs one.
