The Knocks x Dragonette x Aquaria at the 9:30 Club
Go To This Because We Asked So Nicely – A Concert Preview
By Benjamin Copas
There is a recherché, revelatory sort of transformation a popstar undergoes when they meet their perfect collaborators: Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones; Max Martin and Robyn; Charli XCX, SOPHIE and A. G. Cook. From the release of their first track together, “Slow Song,” it was apparent that the meeting of electronic duo The Knocks, aughties dance icon Dragonette and drag legend Aquaria, was of this particular breed of kismet.
A triennium past the release of their single, the quartet reunited to release Revelation, one of the most exhilarating dance records of the past year. Blending the sterility of corporate aesthetics with the exuberant sound of ‘80s dance pop, the album is equal parts cerebral and playful. From the hypnotizing spoken-word of “Keynote” to the bubblegum pop-perfection of “Dreams,” Revelation is a must-listen for anyone prone to poptimism.
The unofficial group is reuniting for two more shows back to back— one night in D.C., the next in Chicago.
