Swervedriver is an alternative English rock band that has been around for a long time; this is their 35th reunion tour. They have formed, split up, reunited, split up, released solo efforts, and formed again, with band member substitutions for the bass and drummer positions. For their 35th reunion tour, they’ve toured Canada and are working on the Northeast, from Chicago to New York. On August 26, they will perform in Washington, D.C., at The Atlantis. In September, they will be in Australia. In December, they will be on the West Coast.
The band is described as following within these genres: shoegaze, alternative rock, dream pop and grunge. I hadn’t ever heard for shoegaze and dream pop. According to Wikipedia, shoegaze is characterized by ethereal soundscapes, obscured vocals, and extensive use of guitar effects and distortion. Dream pop is emphasizes atmosphere and sonic texture as strongly as it does pop melody. These terms also overlap and are sometimes used interchangeably. From what I have heard, these terms describe Swervedriver perfectly.
Their most recent album, The World’s Fair was released in March, 2025.
The Atlantis is a standing venue. In order to get a bar stool, you must call 202 579-9950 at least 24 hours in advance. The ADA section is on the left next to the stage bouncer, and has good line of sight. Atlantis has free water that you pour for yourself. Parking is problematic, with the closest garage being at Whole Foods, about two blocks away. The U St Metro station is about 3 blocks away. The best way to go is by ride share.
