One big party before getting down to studying is the way to describe Mason Day. Overall the day was great, with nice weather, a great turnout, free food, and a concert to wrap it up. The event was well spread out giving people to move around and see all the different activities going on around. Mason Day was located in Lot L, which was nice to consider the parking problems which campus has has lately, thinking back to the circus. There were three large rides for the students to enjoy: A Ferris wheel, a double spinner, and a defy gravity! all of which are very popular rides. When WGMU came the Ferris wheel was in full swing and it was surprisingly fast compared to other Ferris wheels.

The lines which came from the rides were rather long themselves though this did not discourage others from trying to get the chance to get on the ride. Most students would go together as a group and chat while waiting which would help the time pass. Others would go for the smaller lines or the blow up activities like the basket ball shoot or attempt at getting some of the free food available.

There were hot dogs and hamburgers prepared for the students to enjoy. To accompany there was watermelon, chips, Oreos, and drinks at the main station. Scattered around the event there was p

opcorn, cotton candy, and ice cream.

Everyone seemed that they were enjoying themselves as well as WGMU since we had some of our own performing for the event! If you heard the really amazing DJ between the performances, that was Daniel Albert, one of WGMU’s DJs! He did an amazing job with his performance!

(Left to Right) Storm, Brandon, Alex, Donnie, Tyler

WGMU also gave away tickets to the LMFAO concert which is going to be at George Mason’s Patriot Center only on June 25! There was also a raffle for the Jason Mraz performance, and the Warp tour given out. WGMU was also happy to hand out some Donald Glover comedy DVDs, WGMU & Mason T-shirts, and a variety of CDs.

There was also a very important person in attendance to Mason Day, George Mason’s own President Alan G. Merten. who came to enjoy the event with the Mason Students. Overall the event went over very well and Mason’s students enjoyed the day. Even though the lines were long, the wait was worth it for the food, rides, and memories for George Mason’s students.

You know that the year is coming close to an end when you start seeing high school students and their parents roaming around campus. The largest gathering of these prospective students was at the Spring Preview.

The tour began at the Patriot Center to start introductions to the school and George Mason pulled out all the stops! The perspective students were welcomed in with the passion of music by the Green Machine with “Doc” Nix leading in their iconic and innovative songs. It didn’t stop there, the Ringling Brothers and Barnum

& Bailey Circus’ ringmaster, Brian Crawford Scott, welcomed the students to the spring preview. Giving just a flash to what it is like here at Mason having one of the most used arenas in the area!

After all the formal introductions and explaining what makes George Mason the best university to choose they were separated into three groups to see the dorm life, organizations, and to talk with the different major groups which are taught here on campus.

WGMU held an information table in front of SUB 1 showing what WGMU has to offer. There were many other clubs, fraternities, and on campus organizations to show just a slice of what is offered here at George Mason. There were many performances held by fraternities, sororities, and clubs. Everyone showed their skills and what opportunities they could have as students of George Mason. Each one talked about what their were working for in George Mason. Everyone showed their skills and what opportunities they could have as students of George Mason. There was also food available when the second group came, giving them the chance to sit down and enjoy the food that Mason has to offer.

WGMU also has great opportunities for students of George Mason- take a look!

On Wednesday, April 11th there was the opening ceremony for the completion of the new resident dorms on campus, Rogers and Whitetop. The event consisted of food, a panel on sustainability, cake, and a concert (featuring Jukebox the Ghost)! There were tours for perspective students and students whom will be moving there next year, to see what they could expect from these new dorms. The event went over well with a great turnout from the student and staff of George Mason, the one complaint would have been the weather, being a bit windy but did not enough hinder the event.

The food at the event was so good and thoughtful of the different diets to all that attended. The panel focused on sustainability and how George Masons faculty, students, and Jukebox the Ghost’s guitarist, Tommy Siegel, talked about sustainability. They talked about how they perceived sustainability and what ways they are hoping to show others how much sustainability helps the earth. There was much discussion about how art can focus and work with sustainability. They said that most people didn’t associate or expect art to focus on such a topic as sustainability. The panel though disproved this ideal since there were two art majors there with one Professor for the Arts. There was also Dr. Harold Geller, who talked from the astronomer’s perspective of our earth and though it may be small compared to the rest of the universe it is still the place where we live and everything we care for. Tommy Siegle said that though Jukebox the Ghost does use energy with all their tours, though they are working on ways which they can lessen their foot print on the environment.

There was then a cake cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening and all the hard work which had gone into the creation of Rodgers and Whitetop to be ready for the Spring semester for the freshman living in the commons to move in. This created an early start to the renovation of the Commons. The cakes had the photos of two perspectives of the new dorms, in chocolate and vanilla. The cake was amazing, so WGMU tips their hat off to the chief. The cake was surrounded by cupcakes of the flavors: vanilla, chocolate, red velvet, and strawberry. Everyone was very pleased with the deserts to snack on.

There was the performance by Jukebox the Ghost to close off the event. Tommy Seigle (Guitarist/Co-Vocalist), Ben Thornewill (Pianist/Co-Vocalist), and Jesse Kristin (Drummer) showed what they had in their performance. They played music from their album, Oh Emily, which is now available on their site! Their performance was great, especially considering there were two electronic problems; once they were fixed they would just dive right back into the music. They showed how much passion they have for music and their love for performing. Tommy and Ben showed off their skills for singing singing alone or as a duet. Jesse showed more of his skills in the background as the show went on with a little flash of a drumstick or a maraca flying in the air. Towards the end of their performance they asked the audience if there were any requests and people chimed in with Jukebox the Ghosts songs. Jukebox the Ghost was a great band to perform for the event and WGMU cannot wait for there next performance here at Mason.

The event overall was great, there are now two more dorms to add to the campus list. Adding 600 more beds available to the student population, with a great view.
