When I was a green teen coming of age in the suburbs of South Australia, I would search relentlessly for artists that embodied my love of storytelling and attention to sonic detail. I found just that in Courtney Barnett.

My first impression of her work was hearing her 2014 track “Avant Gardener” a TV show, which I added to my playlist instantaneously. Since then, I have followed her emergence as one of the most innovative alternative rock artists of her generation, epitomising the humility and grit of Australian culture through her earnest narration and snarling musicality.

Barnett continues to shine in her fourth studio album, Creature of Habit, which contemplates how it is to find beauty in the mundane and extract purpose from it. On “Mantis,” she sings, “I’m floating aimless but got my feet concreted beneath this creature of habit, teach me the magic of an extraordinary day,” expounding on her persevering efforts to live in the moment.

The singer-songwriter is taking the album on tour around North America and is due to make a stop at The Anthem in Washington, D.C. on May 10. The show will be supported by Momma and Truman Sinclair. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., with the show starting at 7:00 p.m.
